Facing the ocean from the eastern half of the Kii Peninsula, Mie Prefecture is well known as home to the famous pilgrims’ destination, Ise Grand Shrine. Close to the ocean, the seafood here is phenomenal, but if you head west away from the sea you’ll encounter mountains covered in untouched primeval forest. In the southern half of the prefecture stretches the Kumano Kodo, a road walked by countless pilgrims since antiquity as they made their way to the holy sites of the Kumano Sanzan shrines.
