This temple was established in 850 by the high priest of Hieizan Enryaku-ji, Jikaku Daishi Ennin. It is designated as an Important Cultural Property and also registered as a World Heritage Site. It is one of the greatest collections of Heian era Buddhist art in eastern Japan, as Konjikido (the Golden Hall), paintings, calligraphy, and other craft works are preserved here in very good condition.
