A volcanic island located in Kagoshima Bay with a perimeter of about 55 km and an area of about 77 km. After its eruption in 1941, it is now connected to the Osumi Peninsula. Dspite the volcano's continued activity, it remains a famous tourist spot.

During March, there is a tournament, that relies on a "rogaining" map and a compass, surrounding the checkpoint. A "night walk" is available during early May and you can enjoy the nighttime in Sakurajima.
