Mount Wakakusa is 342-m above sea level, and is located to the east of Nara Park. The wild plants that cover the mountain are natural to Japan. There are many deer. The mountain has a variety of seasonal natural beauty such as cherry blossoms in spring, red leaves and Japanese pampas grasses in the autumn.

    On the fourth Saturday of each January, the dead grass of Mt. Wakakusa is burned in an annual festival known as Yamayaki. This is the traditional event to herald the arrival of early spring in the ancient city Nara. An enormous flame jetting into the winter sky is truly spectacular. A firework display is held just before the Yamayaki event.

  • Nearest Station/IC Access

    Take Nara-kotsu bus at JR/Kintetsu Nara Station to Kasuga-Taisha and get off at the last stop.(10 min.) 5-minute walk from the bus stop to the foot of the mountain.

    From JR/Kintetsu Nara Station:
    Take the Nara Kotsu bus (City Loop Bus Outer Circle) and get off at "Daibutsu-Kasugataisha mae". A 10-minute walk to the foot of mountain.
    Take a "Gurutto" bus bound for Nara Park and get off at "Sanroku (south gate)".
