With its castle keep reaching for the sky, and beautiful white walls expanding across the horizon, this castle is sometimes called Shirasagi Castle (White Heron Castle), because it looks like a white heron flying in the sky. It became Japan's first World Cultural Heritage site in 1993. Blooming cherry blossom trees surround the castle in spring and the autumn leaves offer a spectacular view during autumn.
