Hakone Tozan Railway
©AFLO, Hideki Nawate
Opened in 1919, this mountain railroad climbs the steep slopes of Hakone. It was designed to be easy on the local environment, and visitors will feel the beauty and health of the forest. The hydrangeas are in full bloom around mid-June, and are so abundant it feels as though you could touch them from the train car windows, earning the train its name, “The Hydrangea Train”.
Hakone-cho, Ashigarashimo, Kanagawa
Varies by station. Usually 5:00-23:00
The hydrangea that bloom along the route make it especially beautiful so it's best to go in early summer. However, this is also the rainy season so be sure to check the weather report first.
