This is a World Heritage site. Beginning with the Fujiwara clan in the Heian period (794 to 1185) until now 3,000 lanterns around the shrine have been donated by worshipers . Mantoro, an event in which all the lanterns are lit at once, occurs two times a year, on the nights of Setsubun (the day before the beginning of spring in Japan) in February and Obon (annual Buddhist event for commemorating one's ancestors) in August, the thousands shrine lanterns are all lit at once.
