This festival starts on July 1st and lasts for a month. It is held by the Yasaka Jinja Shrine and its purpose is to protect against plagues. It is also the festival that announces the beginning of the summer, and very characteristic of this season in Kyoto. The highlight is the "Yamahoko Junko," when 23 floats parade around the town playing music. This takes place every year on July 17th.
