Hirosaki Neputa Festival
©AFLO, Masami Goto
There are various theories as to the origin of this festival, but it is said that it started from a farmer event called "Nemuri Nagashi". The event was aimed at washing away sleepiness and laziness, which prevented farmers from getting on with work during the summer when farms are busiest. Men push, pull, and carry around the 9 meter-long "Neputa" float, which has warriors drawn on it. It is a sight to see the "Neputa" being carried.
August 1st to August 7th
Be careful, as the route the Neputa parades through is different depending on the day. Check out the latest information on their website before visiting.
