Its streets lined with buildings rich in the spirit of the Edo era, Narai-juku has been nationally designated as an Important Preservation District for Group of Traditional Buildings. During winter, the chill in the mornings and evenings is severe, often dropping below -10 °C. Making the best of the winter cold, this festival was sparked by local interests wanting to liven up the area. Around 1,500 ice candles are lit, creating a mystically magical atmosphere.

Once a year on this day alone, the people living in this post-station town put out their lights to enjoy the candles. Some years, there’s lots of snow, and sometimes the road ices over, so be careful as you’re walking around.

  • Nearest Station/IC Access

Board at Kiso-Fukushima Station, JR Chuo Line, and ride about 20 minutes to Narai Station.

From the Shiojiri IC on the Nagano Expressway, drive west along Route 20/Route 19 for about 40 minutes.
