Echizen Ono Castle

©AFLO, Hideaki Tanaka
Atop the 249-meter spur of Kameyama in the northwest of Ono City, Fukui Prefecture, this castle took the daimyo (feudal lord) Nagachika Kanamori five years to build. On those days when a sea of clouds rises to envelop the mountain-foot town, Kameyama alone floats above, transforming Echizen Ono Castle into a "castle in the sky."
