It was said that the the spring in the shrine's cave can multiply money if washed. The shrine was established by Yoritomo Minamoto, the first Kamakura shogun, after he dreamed of the god Ugafuku, telling him of a spring that gushes out from the rocks in the northwest. After finding the spring, he subsequently had the shrine built in honor of the god. The tradition of washing money began with Tokiyori Hojo, the fifth generation ruler, who came to the shrine to worship; he washed his coins, and told everyone else to do so, saying they would be rewarded by Ugafuku. The spring here is also counted as one of the "Five Famous Springs of Kamakura," and even now, visitors come here to wash their money.
