There are two major sites of ancient worship registered as World Heritage Sites in the prefecture: Koyasan, a mountaintop district of temples founded by the monk Kukai; and the Kumano Sanzan shrines, composed of Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha.
