There are two major sites of ancient worship registered as World Heritage Sites in the prefecture: Koyasan, a mountaintop district of temples founded by the monk Kukai; and the Kumano Sanzan shrines, composed of Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha. Also, be sure to stop by Nachikatsuura Town to see the Nachi Falls, one of the Three Great Falls of Japan and the tallest waterfall in the country.
