Karuizawa is famous for being a resort area where one can escape the summer heat. Located at the foot of Mount Asama, it has a very mild climate that maintains a pleasant average temperature of 20.5 °C even in mid-summer. It’s also easy to get to, only an hour or so away from the Tokyo area on the Shinkansen bullet train. You might not be surprised to hear about the area’s natural scenic beauty at places like Shiraito Falls and Kumoba Pond, but Karuizawa is also dotted with places to experience Japanese history, including the old station towns of Oiwake-shuku and Karuizawa-shuku.
