5 magnificent sceneries of steam rising from Beppu Onsen, Oita
With a daily yield of 137,040 kl and more than 2,200 hot spring sources, the Beppu Onsen is the largest onsen in Japan. If you walk through the peaceful town, you will see cats lying around above the steam rising from various places.
This time, I would like to introduce 5 magnificent sceneries of rising steam at the Beppu Onsen in Oita prefecture.

◎When you go to Beppu, you must go to the "Jigoku Tour" first
The "Jigoku Tour" is a popular tourist attraction in Beppu that consists of a tour of the 7 "Jigoku". A "Jigoku" is the hot air and fumes that blow out from 250 to 350 meters underground.
This time I would like to introduce the magnificent sceneries of the most popular cobalt blue "Umi Jigoku", the contrastingly red colored "Chinoike Jigoku", and the historic "Yunohana-goya huts of Myoban Jigoku".

Steam Scenery 1 Umi Jigoku

Look at the steam that rises from the cobalt blue hot water!
It is a scene so beautiful that you can feel some mysterious spiritual power from it.

Iron sulfate, which is the component of this hot spring, dissolves to create this beautiful blue color. In the park you can see water lilies from the Amazon that were cultivated at the park using the heat from the hot springs.

Crystals called Yunohana that are used for bathing powders are made from the collected "myoban", or alum, inside the Yunohana-goya huts. At the Myoban Jigoku, you can enjoy many activities such as going on a tour of the historic huts from the Edo period or the Jigoku, or spending some time at the footbath.

Steam Scenery 4 Jigoku Steam Cooking Center

The "Jigoku-Mushi" is a traditional cooking method used from the Edo period that uses onsen fume of 98 degrees Celsius and 100% geothermal energy.
At the Jigoku Steam Cooking Center, you can experience steaming and eating eggs, seafood, and meat in the onsen heat.
When you steam the ingredients, they gain more taste as the saltiness from the steam mixes in, making the food more delicious! There is also a facility where you can drink hot spring water and a footbath, so be sure to enjoy the hot spring from inside your body and out. Entry to the facility and the footbath are free!
