This is the only natural lake in the Mt. Daisetsu National Park. It has a depth of 100 meters, and is located at an altitude of 810 meters above sea level - the highest point of Hokkaido Prefefecture. Shikaribetsu Lake also claims to be the lake with the most clear, transparent water in the whole of Japan. Lots of visitors flock to the area every year from late January to late March to see the "Kotan" ("Village" in Ainu aboriginal language) - a village made only with ice and snow. Mt. Tembo, commonly referred to as "Mt. Lips", is a symbol of the area and is located to the east of the lake.
