Higashi Honganji Temple
A temple with over 400-years of history located within walking distance of Kyoto Station. Although the official name of the temple is “Shinshu Honbyo Temple”, it is more commonly referred to as Higashi Honganji Temple due to its location east (east = higashi in Japanese) of Nishi Honganji Temple (west = nishi in Japanese). It is the head temple of the “Otani Sect. of Shinshu” in the Jodo-Shin Sect.. Goeido, the main entrance before Goeidomon Gate, is around 927 tatami-mats big (1,532 sq. meters), and is said to be the largest wooden structure in the world. Shosei-en Garden, in the neighboring grounds, is a must-see in late November when the autumnal colors magnificently color the area.
