Selected as one of Japan's 100 Waterfalls, it is also one of Hida's Great Three Waterfalls. It has a 64-meter drop, with a width of about 6 meters, and the water is so abundant that a roaring sound can be heard echoing all around the waterfall. During the cold winter season in February, it freezes into a mighty ice pillar, which is lighted up for a fantastic view. In addition, the nearby Hirayu Onsen is the setting for the legend of the aged white monkey who led the exhausted Takeda army to safety away from the war, 450 years ago.
