Ueno Toshogu Shrine
- 上野東照宮
- Tokyo
Built in 1627. it is a shrine that honors Ieyasu Tokugawa as a god. Most of the structures are precious remnants of early Edo period architecture, and have been damaged by war and earthquakes, including the golden shrine. It is said that the fact that these relics have survived all sorts of difficulties is testament to Ieyasu's strong luck. There is also a Peony Garden in the area, and every year, a Winter Peony festival is held from January 1 to the end of February, and a Spring Peony Festival from mid-April to early May. The Dahlia exhibition, held from the end of September to the end of October, features a lush landscape in the middle of a bustling city, and is a must-see.
