Atamizakura Itogawa River Cherry Blossom Festival
Feb. Early morning
Along the Itokawa River promenade which runs through the center of the city, there are about 60 "atamizakura" blossoms in full bloom from January to mid-February, and in conjunction with this, the "Itokawa River Sakura Festival" is held. Atamizakura are the earliest cherry blossoms to bloom in Japan, and it was said to have been brought to Japan in 1871 by Italians, along with lemons and dates. The flowering period lasts for one month, and this was said to be because one of the buds bloom early on one branch, and in the second stage, the other bud blooms a little later.
