Once a settlement that flourished as a base for the shipbuilding industry from mid-Edo to the Meiji period, Shukunegi became popular when it was featured in a JR tv commercial entitled "Grown Women's Holiday Club," starring popular Japanese actress Sayuri Yoshinaga. In the town's narrow, maze-like alleys, more than 100 houses with flat plate walls are still densely populated in the present, as it was long ago. The area is also a designated important traditional preserved building district in Japan.
