Maruyama's Thousand Rice Terraces is one of Japan's 100 rice paddy fields, and the largest in the terraces style, with about 1,340 paddies. The view of its landscape is considered as the best in Japan. Though it was not certain when it was created, records show that there were 2,240 paddies in 1601. Due to the lack of successors to farm the land, it decreased to 530 paddies in the early Heisei period. Local residents grieved about this, took action, and restored the fields to its current landscape. An insect feeding event is held from June to July, where around 1,300 candles are lighted in the fields, creating a spectacular view along with the sunset.
