Kumano Sanzan is located in the southern part of the Kii Peninsula in Kumano and refers to three shrines: Hongu, Shingu and Nachi. It's registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Culture Site under ”Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.”

For commoners in the Edo period, the "Kumano Moude" or trip to Kumano was equal to the famed Ise Pilgrimage to the Ise Grand Shrine.
