Drift Ice in the Sea of Okhotsk
The drift ice in the Sea of Okhotsk is a winter event that can be seen in Abashiri City and other areas of Hokkaido. In the winter, about 80% of the sea, which is usually lush and green, is covered with drift ice, turning it into a completely white world. About 10 kilometers north of Abashiri City, Cape Notoro juts out into the Sea of Okhotsk, where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the white drift ice stretching to the horizon, as there is nothing to block the view. In addition, the drift ice sightseeing icebreaking boat, which are popular among Abashiri's drift ice tourists, offer scenery that cannot be seen on the coast. Since they are large sightseeing ships, there is little rocking so that you can enjoy the cruise comfortably.
