Sado Gold Mine

- Niigata
Actively producing gold and silver for 388 years, this mine is said to be the biggest mine of its kind in the early modern period of Japan. This mine is said to have supported the finances of the shogunate government in the Edo Period, but the mine is inactive today due to the depletion of its resources. It is now open to public as an industrial relic.
