This island, located about 40 minutes from the Port of Nagasaki by boat, is known commonly by the name Gunkanjima Island. A profitable undersea miningi industry flourished here from the Meiji period to the Showa period. It closed in 1974 (49th year of the Show period) and has been uninhabited ever since. In recent years, exploring ruins has become very popular among Japanese tourists and the island is now a significant tourist destination.
