Bokke (Mud volcano)
Bokke is located about 15 minutes walk from Akan Onsen town. Bokke means "boiling place" in the Ainu language and refers to the geological phenomenon of "mud volcanoes", where geothermal heat from the volcanoes causes hot mud and water over 100 degrees Celsius to gush out along with volcanic gases, constantly erupting onto the land surface. There is also a 1.5 km walking trail to Bokke, and next to the Akankohan Eco-Museum Center, there is the Bokke Forest, a mixture of coniferous and broad-leaved trees, where you can see a variety of plants and wildlife.
