Mount Kusatsu-Shirane is an active volcano located in Kusatsu Town, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture, at an altitude of 2,160 m. The official name is "Mt. Shirane", but to distinguish it from other Shirane Mountains it is called "Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane" with added area name. The highlight of the mountain is Lake Yugama that looks like a moon with a white rock surface and the emerald green water shining on the crater brings a mysterious atmosphere. The reason for this beautiful color is Iron ions and sulfur dissolve in it that absorbs light of a specific wavelength. You can enjoy many hiking trails around Mt. Shirane and see such alpine plants as gentian, dicentra, and rhododendron.
