Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge
- 奥祖谷二重かずら橋
- Oboke, Iya & Mt. Tsurugi
Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge stretches across the Iya River flowing through the Oku-Iya district of Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture. It is said that the Taira clan (one of the 4 most important clans that dominated in Japanese politics), who lost the Genpei War about 800 years ago, built the bridge for horse-riding practice in Mt.Tsurugi. Since there are two bridges, Otokobashi (lit. Man Bridge) and Onnabashi (lit. Woman Bridge), it is also known as "Otokobashi Onnabashi" or "Meotobashi" (Married bridge). The frame is made from the vine plant "hardy kiwi", which grows naturally in the high mountains. You will feel the thrill of a primitive suspension bridge that sways every time you walk. Around the bridge, you can enjoy the scenery of the four seasons changes dramatically.
