Taketomi Island

This island, only about 9 kilometers around, is located about 10 minutes away from Ishigaki Island via high-speed ship. The traditions of Okinawa persist on here all, such as shisa statues (lion dogs) with each featuring unique facial expressions on the red tiled roofs of the houses, road covered with pure-white coral sands, and vivid flowers. The island is a popular tourist destinations and is designated as an important preservation district of historic buildings by the government.
