Higashi Chayagai
- ひがし茶屋街
- Kanazawa
Higashi Chayagai retains its geisha houses from the late Edo through the early Meiji periods (1750's-1870's). This invaluable streetscape passes down Japan's magnificent geisha house culture to the present age. Even now, the sounds of shamisen (a type of stringed musical instruments) and taiko drums can be heard from geisha houses where lamps are lit under the eaves.
