This farming prison, consisting of a total area of 1,700 hectares, grew crops and livestock, as well as managed forestry. The prison was considered to be the most difficult one to escape in Japan, and it is the northernmost prison in Japan.

    Although tourists are not allowed inside the facilities, they can see the actual buildings formerly used as the real prison and taste the prison food at the “Abashiri Prison Museum” nearby.

  • Nearest Station/IC Access

    Take a bus from either the ”Abashiri Station” on the JR Sekihoku Main Line or Memanbetsu Airport to “Abashiri Keimusho (Abashiri Prison Museum) Mae” stop, and walk for 5 minutes.

    A 20-minute walk from the “Abashiri Station” on the JR Sekihoku Main Line.
