Kushiro Shitsugen is a vast marshland that encompasses the Kushiro River and its tributaries, and it is said to be the largest marshland in Japan. It spreads over the 4 municipalities of Kushiro City, Kushiro Town, Shibecha Town, and Tsurui Village. It is home to many wild animals, such as the Japanese crane (red-crowned crane,) which is designated as a Special Natural Monument.
