Akita Kanto Festival
Akita Kanto Festival

Aug. Night

With its origins in warding off disease-causing evil spirits of midsummer, this festival is celebrated in hope of a good harvest, and developed along with Tanabata Festival (the Star Festival). “Kanto”, made to look like rice plants and rice bags, are paraded through the streets. The largest of these kanto is 12m tall and weighs 50kg, and five different carrying techniques are performed to entertain the audience.
