The town maintains its look from the Edo Period, and was the first area to be designated as an important preservation district of historic buildings. It has flourished from ancient times as an important point for traffic and a post town. Currently, there is a trekking course that goes through Tsumago-juku.

Visitors can enjoy traditional folk handicraft, and there are many places to eat and shop. The post town is open exclusively for pedestrians between 10 am and 4 pm, and traffic is not allowed in during this time.
