Lake Okutadami is one of the greatest fall foliage spots in Niigata, and has also been selected as one of the Japan's 100 best fall destinations. In autumn, visitors can see the mountain peaks around the lake covered by snow, while the deep red, yellow and orange autumn hues rise up to mid-mountain. Better yet, the "Takigumo" (cloud waterfall) is a sight to behold. When the surrounding valleys are filled with clouds of fog, the fog begins to roll over the mountain tops like a waterfall. This incredible phenomenon only happens in autumn in the early morning.

The sightseeing boat is a popular attraction at Lake Okutadami. It is hard to get a reservation during the fall leaf-viewing season. If you want to enjoy the beautiful autumn colors from the boat, be sure to make a reservation well in advance.
