Its streets lined with buildings rich in the spirit of the Edo era, Narai-juku has been nationally designated as an Important Preservation District for Group of Traditional Buildings. During winter, the chill in the mornings and evenings is severe, often dropping below -10 °C. Making the best of the winter cold, this festival was sparked by local interests wanting to liven up the area. Around 1,500 ice candles are lit, creating a mystically magical atmosphere.
