Kikyogahara in Shiojiri City is known across Japan as a wine-producing region, where growth in small-scale wineries centered around the established ones. Kikyogahara is a developed region for the production of wine in Japan, and though it primarily ferments with Niagara and Concord grapes, there has been continued research into Merlot grapes, which are thought to be difficult to cultivate in cold climates. With pioneering efforts inside the prefecture, there have been developments in the growth of European grape varietals like Chardonnay and Merlot. Owing to global warming, the climate here in recent years has become especially well-suited toward the growing of wine grapes.
