The Passage of Gods at Lake Suwa
Lake Suwa, the largest lake in Nagano, often freezes over completely in winter. On certain years, the ice can be thicker than 10cm. When the temperature stays below -10℃ for several days, the ice on the lake's surface cracks and a "ice ridge' is formed. This is known as the Omiwatari, or "The Passage of Gods", as depicted in the first picture above.
