Hirano Shrine was built in 794 and the main hall has been designated as a Important Cultural Property of Japan. The current main building was constructed between the years of 1624 and 1644 in a special architectural style known as Hiyoku-zukuri. The shrine has a cherry blossom flower motif as its crest, which came about because thousands of cherry trees were planted by Emperor Kazan on its ground during the Heian period (794 - 1185). It is a popular cherry blossom spot with 400 cherry trees of 50 different species, and a cherry blossom festival is held every year on the 10th of April.
