The 2,000 year-old cherry tree stands at a height of 10.3 meters with a circumference of 11.8 meters around its roots. It is the oldest and the largest cherry tree in Japan and the first to be designated as Japan's Natural Monument in the Taisho period. In 1990, it also entered the list of New Top 100 Historical Trees in Japan. The name of the tree came from the folklore which said that the tree was planted by Yamato Takeru during his travels to the region. The tree is also known by another name, Myoho-zakura (Saddharma Cherry), which originated from another legend that in the 13th century, when venerable Nichiren saw the withering tree, he prayed for its recovery and saved the tree. It is one of the Top Three Cherry Blossoms in Japan.
