With an area of 151 square-kilometer and a 90 kilometer shoreline, Lake Saroma is the third largest lake in Japan after Lake Biwa and Lake Kasumigaura and the largest in Hokkaido. Its unique blue water is known as "Saroma Blue". The lake is also known for its beautiful sunset. The Kimuaneppu Cape that protrudes into the lake is a treasure trove for primitive plants. In autumn, the cape is dyed red by coral grass in full bloom. Other than an observatory deck which offers a view of Shiretoko Peninsula in the distance, you can also take a stroll along the walking trails to enjoy the lake.
