Sawara once flourished as the transport hub for shipment of goods into Edo via Tone River in the Edo period and known as Edo-masari, which means "better than Edo" in English. Here, you can find the former residence of Ino Tadataka, as well as buildings from different eras including the Edo, Meiji, and Taisho period. All these come together to create the unique townscape in Sawara.
