Yunohira Onsen
- 湯平温泉
- Oita & Beppu
The hot spring town is located in a valley along Kagonogawa River. In the town, you can find ryokans, as well as five public bathhouses along a cobblestone pavement which was laid down during the Edo period. The onsen has a longer history than the nearby Yufuin Onsen, and is believed to have opened during the Kamakura period (1185 - 1333). It gained popularity as a hot spring health resort during the Showa period (1926–1989) and became known as the second most popular hot spring in Kyushu after Beppu Onsen before the war. The hot spring contains sodium chloride sulfate spring which is believed to cure digestion troubles. Because of that, some ryokans use the water for cooking and even provide them as drinking water for their guests.
