Tonomachi Street in Tsuwano
San'indo is a major highway that existed in old Japan which began at Tanba checkpoint in Kyoto, and passes through Hyogo, Tottori, and Shimane before ending in Ogoori in Yamaguchi. Tsuwano-juku is located one station after Masuda-juku on San'indo. Traces of the historical road have been preserved in this former post town known as “little Kyoto” of San’in. In Tonomachi Street, you can see traditional Namako walls (white wall with grid-like pattern at the bottom) and carps swimming in the canals. The street is a symbol of Tsuwano and a popular tourist destination. Tsuwano Town Hall is located behind Ooka-Karo Gate. It is the gate to the residence of Ooka clan who had served as top-ranking officials in Tsuwano Domain for generations.
