Nov.

Oiwaki-juku is a historic post town that once flourished as the intersection town of two major highways, Nakasendo and Hokkoku-Kaido, during the Edo period. The teahouse in town has been preserved in its original state. The town developed after the Sankin-kotai rule (a rule that made it compulsory for all daimyo to travel to Edo every year) was established and you can find a sign marking the intersection here. Apart from the daimyo procession, the town is also bustling with people on their way to visit Zenkoji. You can see traces of the former post town from the few buildings that are still standing in Oiwake.
