Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine
Dazaifu Tenmangu is the head shrine of approximately 12,000 shrines across Japan dedicated to Michizane Sugawara. It is built over the grave of Michizane. Following his death, he was conferred the rank of Tenman Daijizai Tenjin and became "Tenjin", a deity in Shinto religion. Known as God of Scholarship, Devotion, and Yakuyoke (warding off evil), people travel from all over Japan to pray to him. The shrine is especially crowded during the exam period with families praying for their children's success. Situated in its premises, the Shrine Museum is the first to be registered as a museum in Fukuoka and has a collection of over 50,000 items, from articles associated with Michizane to national treasures. It also has an exhibition dedicated to the Kuroda Clan, a clan associated with Dazaifu City.
