White Wall District of Chikugo-Yoshii
Oct.
White walls dozo-zukuri (earthen-wall storehouse style) buildings dating back from the Edo to the early Showa period have been preserved in this area. The town once flourished in the Edo period as a post town on Bungo-Kaido. It later converted into a merchant town and became a major commercial city during the Meiji and Taisho period. The dozo-zukuri houses that you see today were built then. Traces of its former prosperity can be seen from the traditional buildings that remain in this canal town today. In 1996, it was designated as Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the country.
