Nishi Chaya District dates back to the Edo period and is one of the three well preserved chaya districts in Kanazawa. Rows of buildings with protruding wooden latticework windows—a common feature of buildings in chaya districts—line the streets, among which are several traditional Japanese restaurants. Japanese author Shimada Seijiro is also known to have been raised here. The Kanazawa Nishi Chaya Museum exhibits the works of the author as well as items once used in these chaya (tea houses). In the evening, the sound of shamisen spills out onto the streets, further adding on to the charm of this historical district.
